First-office checklist (the short one).
If it does not help you sit, print, or file in month one, it can wait. This is not a Pinterest haul and not a 40-page procurement RFP.
A new LLC still operating from a kitchen table does not need a reception sofa. It needs a place to type, a way to print, and a box for the paper the accountant will ask for. Default store: Office Depot / OfficeMax, because you can walk the aisle, confirm an ink model, and take a chair home that day.
Buy these
- Paper: one to two reams of 20 lb, 92-bright copy paper to start. A full case if you already know you print daily. Do not buy cardstock “for branding” until you have a real use.
- Ink or toner: the cartridge that lists your exact printer model, plus one spare black. See the restock guide. If you do not have a printer yet, that is the Office Kit sister site — do not guess ink.
- Desk: a simple rectangular work surface that fits the room. Folding table is allowed in month one. Cable management can be a handful of clips, not a $200 trough.
- Chair: something with lumbar you can sit in for two hours of invoicing. Try it in the store. Catalog photos lie about foam.
- Filing: a small file box or a 2-drawer cabinet, hanging folders, manila folders, and a cheap label maker or a Sharpie. Bankers boxes for archives.
- Desk kit: pens, a pad, scissors, packing tape, a stapler, envelopes that match the invoices you actually send.
- Trash and recycling: two bins. Glamorous.
- Power: a surge strip. Not a data-center UPS unless you have a real reason.
Buy when the job appears
- A second chair for a bookkeeper who visits twice a month.
- A visitor chair if clients sit in the room. Not before.
- A laminator, badge printer, or poster maker. Those are specific trades.
- A full break-room setup. A kettle is enough.
- Decorative plants as a line item. If you want a plant, take a cutting from home.
Print counter as a backup
Office Depot’s copy and print counter is the reason a jammed shop printer does not have to stop a licensing packet. You can also print a handful of color flyers without owning a photo inkjet. That backup is part of why the default store is not a pure e-commerce warehouse.
How to walk the store (or the site) without filling the trunk
Shop with the checklist on your phone. If an endcap is not on the list, it is optional. Confirm ink by model number on the box, not by “HP-ish.” Measure the desk wall before you fall in love with a 72-inch top. Sit in the chair. A 45-minute store run
Park, open this checklist, and walk in this order so you do not double back with a chair already in the cart: ink wall (model number in your phone), paper (one ream or a case — decide before you see the pallet price), folders and a file box, desk kit (pens, tape, stapler, envelopes), then furniture last so you are not steering a desk around the pen aisle. Sit in the chair. If it fails in the store, it fails at home.
If you are ordering online for pickup, still type the printer model into search yourself. Do not trust a “customers also bought” cartridge. Check the pickup ETA. A hold that is ready in two hours is useful; a hold that is ready next Tuesday is just a slower Amazon.
What “first office” is not
It is not a logo wall, a neon “hustle” sign, or a full pantry. Those things do not file a quarterly form. A small shop that spends the furniture budget on décor still sits on a dining chair and still prints at a drugstore. Reverse that. Sit, print, file. Decorate if you are still bored in month four.
It is also not a warehouse club membership by itself. Club stores can win on a case of paper if you already shop there. They lose on sitting in a task chair and on matching an odd ink model. Use them as a paper exception, not as the default office aisle.
Hand-me-downs
A free desk from a cousin is a good desk if it is the right height and does not wobble. A free chair with a broken gas lift is how you buy the chair twice. Accept furniture that works; decline furniture that needs a weekend of repair before you can invoice. Time is the scarce input.
